Did you know that Mexico’s traditional cuisine is the first ethnic cuisine in the world to be recognized by UNESCO on its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity? Incredibly diverse, Mexican cuisine varies widely throughout from state to state, from Oaxacan moles and chapaulins (grasshoppers) to Yucatecan Pollo Pibil and Poc Chuc
to Baja’s fresh seafood. The list goes on and on and on…
Today I’m sharing my favorite Mexican cooking blogs. I visit these essential sites daily for inspiration, education, Mexican recipes, and a window into authentic Mexican kitchens.
Mexico in my Kitchen
One of my favorites! Mely created the blog so that her teenage son would be able to recreate his mother’s home cooking later in his life, whenever he craved her albondigas or tamales or picades. The blog features features traditional homestyle Mexican recipes, with emphasis on food from Tamaulipas (Mely’s home state), Nuevo León, Veracruz, Puebla, Estado de Mexico, Tabasco and Yucatan. Aside from the author’s own recipes, she also shares cooking ideas from well-known chefs, bloggers, and Mexican-food enthusiasts.
De La Tierra Mexican Food Blog
Written by Travis Harvey and Karin Ferguson of the De La Tierra cooking school in Australia. Yes, Oz…not Mexico, but don’t hold that against them. The well-designed site has great recipes, well-written posts, and lots of white-space to sooth your jangly nerves. My whole family is hooked on their ridiculously tasty Sopa Azteca.
The Mija Chronicles
Lesley Téllez is a well-known food writer and culinary guide in New York City, though she spent four years in the Mexico City’s Distrito Federal. She blogs about Mexican food, culture, travel, and photography. A pleasure to read.
Pati’s Mexican Table
Pati, born and raised in Mexico City, and walked away from her job as a Latin American policy analyst to devote herself to cooking full-time. She’s now a teacher and food-writer, and you can watch her PBS show or visit the blog. Chipotle pork sliders anyone?
MexConnect
MexConnect an all-around resources for Mexico on the web. The nice thing about this is you can search by ingredient for recipes, which is really helpful when you have a bunch of random ingredients in the fridge but can’t think of anything to make.
What’s Cooking, Mexico?
A nicely written blog, and though it hasn’t been updated in recent months, I hope Ben Herrera will get back to blogging soon. Ben grew up in Mexico City, where his family ran a fonda for 40 years. Ben grew up working in the restaurant, so he’s got deep insights into and love for Mexican food culture.
Mexico Cooks!
Cristina Potters is a writer and blogger living in Mexico City. She’s lived in Mexico for more than 30 years, and writes about food, life, history and culture. Lots of good information.
Rick Bayless
You know Rick from his PBS show or his multiple Mexican cookbooks. His website is nicely designed and has tons of recipes and educational information. Weirdly, the blog used to lack a search function, which made it difficult to use, but they’ve added one now. Phew!
